MEANING:
"慎独" is a method of moral cultivation in Confucianism that emphasizes the need to be even more strict with oneself when no one is supervising, to be prudent, independent, self-disciplined and to follow a moral code. Being prudent can develop one's character and cultivation, making oneself a person of high moral character and sense of responsibility. The practical methods of "慎独" include maintaining inner peace and tranquility when one is alone, controlling one's desires and impulses, and refraining from doing things that are contrary to morality. At the same time, when confronted with various situations, one must maintain a clear mind and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and make correct decisions in accordance with ethical guidelines.
